A petrol-laden tanker burst into flames on Thursday along the FIDSCO area of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway in Ogun State.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency Commandant, Seni Ogunyemi, confirmed the incident, noting that the tanker fell into a ditch before catching fire.
According to Ogunyemi, despite warnings, several residents were seen attempting to scoop fuel from the spillage.
A video of the accident scene sighted by PUNCH Online also showed some residents scooping the fuel.
He said, “A serious lone accident involving a loaded tanker with PMS fell into a ditch at the FISCO axis, Ijebu-Ode, along the Benin-Ijebu-Ode Expressway, inward Ijebu-Ode.”
“The police and fire service have been contacted. The community has been advised not to get close to the tanker, but they refuse. Efforts are ongoing to transload the product.”
In a further update, Ogunyemi stated that the tanker had caught fire.
While stating that firefighters were making efforts to put the fire out, he did not disclose if there were casualties.
“The earlier reported laden tanker with PMS has caught fire. The fire service was there during the needful,” Ogunyemi said.
