The film was a coming-of-age musical set in the summer of 1977 Virginia Beach inspired by Atlantis Apartments, Pharrell‘s childhood neighborhood.

“When all of us got into the editing room we collectively decided there wasn’t a path forward to tell the version of this story that we originally envisioned,” Pharrell and Michel shared in a joint statement, via Variety. “We appreciate all the hard work of the talented cast and crew. While we’re disappointed we can’t deliver this film, we have incredible partners at Universal and will collaborate in a different capacity again soon.”

After filming, Halle took to social media to give thanks to Pharrell and Michel for having her on the film, which was her first movie after giving birth to son Halo.

“That’s a wrap,” she shared on Instagram. “Thank you to Michel Gondry, @universalpictures & @pharrell for including me in such a magical project. And my amazing castmates. Also to the beautiful people of Virginia for lifting me up and taking such good care of me my first movie back, [3 months] after having my baby. I’m feeling so strong & grateful and can’t wait till y’all get a chance to see this one.”

The movie was also set to star Kelvin Harrison Jr, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monáe, Missy Elliott, Quinta Brunson, Anderson .Paak and Jaboukie Young-White.

Universal Studios will reportedly absorb the $20 million in costs spent on the film.
