Phil Foden has hailed Manchester City team mate Rodri as the best holding holding midfielder in the world following last night’s 4-1 victory over Aston Villa at The Etihad.
Foden was in sensational form as he scored a hat-trick which takes him to 14 Premier League goals this season whilst Rodri was also on the scoresheet.
The England international now has 31 goal contributions in all competitions this season moving him one ahead of England team mate Jude Bellingham.
The 23-year-old shone in a more central role with Pep Guardiola choosing to rest Kevin De Bruyne following the goalless draw with Arsenal last weekend.
Rodri the best holding midfielder in the world?
Rodri’s goal last night took his Premier League tally to seven goals and seven assists this season which is quite something for a defensive midfielder.
The Spanish international is currently on an unbelievable 63 match unbeaten streak which is the longest of any player at an English based club.
Foden hailed Rodri as the best defensive midfielder in the world. The record was previously held by former Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho who had a 58 game unbeaten streak between from November 2006 to February 2008.
City haven’t lost a game with Rodri in the side since the 5th February 2023 when they lost 1-0 away at Tottenham and they lost all three domestic games he was suspended for following a red card against Nottingham Forest in September.

Foden was in no doubt that Rodri was the best holding midfielder in the world and said after the game: “I’m lost for words. This guy, mate, he can do everything!
“I don’t see a weakness to his game, for me, he’s our most important player.
“For me, he’s the best holding midfielder in the world 100%. He can really do everything.”
City are chasing down Liverpool and Arsenal as they aim to become the first team to win four Premier League titles in a row and will need Rodri and Foden to continue their form for the remainder of the season if they are to have any chance.
Next up for Rodri and Foden is a trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday in the 12:30pm kick-off.
