The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, paid a visit to Kwara State on Sunday to meet with the grieving family of Jimoh Abdulqaudri, who tragically passed away in police detention.
The visit followed Abdulqaudri’s death on Friday, December 20, 2024, a case that has sparked public outcry and demand for justice.
Jimoh, who hails from the Balogun Fulani community in Erubu/Asunnara, Ilorin, Kwara State, reportedly died in police custody in the early hours of Friday.
It was gathered that the deceased was arrested by the police operatives on December 19, 2024, for allegedly owing someone, identified as Peter, a sum of N220,000 while he reportedly died on December 20, 2024.
Demonstrating a swift response, the IG directed the Force Criminal Investigations Department to take over the investigation, ensuring a thorough and impartial inquiry.
In a heartfelt interaction with the family, IG Egbetokun extended his deepest sympathies. “I am here today to personally assure you that justice will be served,” the IG stated.
“No stone will be left unturned in uncovering the circumstances that led to this unfortunate incident.”
The Balogun Fulani of Ilorin, Alhaji Sadiq Fulani, who received the IG and spoke on behalf of the family, expressed gratitude for the visit.
“We appreciate your presence and the steps taken to address this tragic loss. Our hope is that the truth will come to light, and those responsible will be held accountable,” Alhaji Fulani remarked.
In his public statement, Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi reaffirmed the police’s stance on professionalism and justice.
“The IGP has ordered the FCID to handle the case with utmost diligence. The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in its commitment to upholding the highest standards of accountability, professionalism, and respect for human rights,” Adejobi said.
The IGP used the platform to reiterate the Force’s zero-tolerance policy towards unprofessional conduct.
“We will not condone any act that undermines the trust between the police and the public,” Egbetokun declared.
“I urge all stakeholders to remain calm and allow the due process of law to take its course.”
