Playwright David Henry Hwang Signs With M88

EXCLUSIVE: David Henry Hwang, the Tony and Grammy Award winning playwright, librettist, and screenwriter whose play Yellow Face begins performances on Broadway next month, has signed with M88 for representation.

The signing comes during one of Hwang’s most prolific years, with Yellow Face on Broadway, his musical Soft Power currently playing at Signature Theatre in Washington DC, his opera Ainadamar opening in October at the Metropolitan Opera, and his classic M. Butterfly set to receive a concert version at London’s Barbican.

Earlier this year, Hwang’s opera, An American Soldier, had its New York premiere at the Perelman Performing Arts Center. Hwang is currently working on the new musical Particle Fever, and his new opera The Monkey King will premiere at San Francisco Opera in 2025.

His Obie-award-winning play Yellow Face will make its Broadway premiere in a new Roundabout Theatre production starring Daniel Dae Kim. Previews begin at the Todd Haimes Theatre on September 13 ahead of an October 1 opening.

On the film and TV side, Hwang is writing an Anna May Wong biopic for Working Title Films and a musical feature film for Paramount Pictures. He is also creating a new TV series based on the bestseller Billion Dollar Whale.

Hwang is a Tony Award winner and three-time nominee, a Grammy Award winner who has been twice nominated, a three-time Obie Award winner in addition to being a three-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama. He serves on the Council of the Dramatists Guild and is a Trustee of the American Theatre Wing, which he Chaired from 2016-2021.

Hwang’s stage works also include Chinglish, Golden Child, The Dance and the Railroad, and FOB, as well as the Broadway musicals Aida, Flower Drum Song, and Disney’s Tarzan. Hwang has written fourteen opera libretti, and he was a writer and consulting producer for the Golden Globe-winning television series The Affair. Screenplays include Possession, M. Butterfly, and Golden Gate.

He will continue to be represented by CAA, Schreck Rose Dapello Adams Berlin & Dunham and Slate PR.
