A 20-year-old man, identified as Faisal Audu, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command in connection with the alleged murder of a hunter named Saheed Awolesi in the Sagamu area.
PUNCH Online understood on Monday, that officers from the Sagamu Police Division made the arrest on Sunday.
According to the state command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, Awolesi had reportedly gone night hunting around 9:00 p.m. on October 5, 2024, but did not return home.
Our correspondent learnt that the victim’s disappearance prompted his family and the hunters’ association to launch a frantic search for his whereabouts.
Odutola informed PUNCH Online that the suspect involved in the hunter’s disappearance was apprehended by officers of the Ibafo Police Command, along with the hunter’s phone and motorcycle.
She said, “Our detectives called the hunter’s mobile number, and it was answered at the Ibafo Police Station. The suspect had already been apprehended by officers from the division and was found in possession of the hunter’s phone and motorcycle.
“A jackknife, a cutlass, and a mobile phone suspected to have been stolen were found in his possession. The suspect was later handed over to the Igbeba Police Division for further investigation.
“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to killing Awolesi and stealing his motorcycle and mobile phone. He led officers to the crime scene, where the victim’s body was discovered, bearing signs of violent injuries.”
The spokesperson added that the body had been recovered and taken to a mortuary in Sagamu for an autopsy as part of the ongoing investigation.
A similar incident was reported by PUNCH Metro in 2022, when suspected gunmen killed a motorcyclist, identified as Ashimiu Lawal, and stole his motorcycle in the Leme area of Abeokuta South Local Government Area of the state.
