The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects and recovered a bag of gunpowder along with ammunition at various locations across the state.

The Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, revealed this in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the arrests were made during intelligence-driven patrols conducted by a joint security task force.

Ikenga stated, “The police arrested two suspects and recovered a large quantity of gunpowder concealed in a bag of cassava flakes (garri), along with a locally-made pistol and live ammunition.”

He explained that on 22 September 2024, operatives patrolling the Pillar-Pole area of Aguata intercepted a suspect (name withheld) carrying three bags of garri. Upon searching the bags, the operatives discovered gunpowder hidden beneath the food items.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was en route to a criminal camp, delivering groceries for consumption and gunpowder intended for the production of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) for the gang,” he said.

“The suspect is currently in custody and is assisting the police in their efforts to apprehend other members of the gang,” Ikenga added.

In a separate development, operatives from the Special

Anti-Cultism Squad, acting on credible intelligence, raided a criminal hideout in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, in the early hours of 25 September.

During the operation, one Nelson Wisdom, a native of Etsako East LGA in Edo State, was arrested. The police also recovered a locally fabricated pistol and two live rounds of ammunition.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnaghe Itam, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to working with other security agencies to act on credible information, continuing efforts to suppress criminal activities and thwart the plans of criminal elements in the state.

He assured the public that all suspects would be charged in court upon the completion of investigations.
