Potential boost for Man United as Liverpool’s planned transfer deal would breach Premier League rules

Manchester United may reportedly have been handed a potential transfer boost as it remains to be seen if Liverpool will be able to go ahead with their plan to sign Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili and then send him on loan to Bournemouth.

The Red Devils have been linked with Mamardashvili by the Daily Mirror recently, and it could make sense for them to target the talented young Georgia international as a replacement for the unconvincing Andre Onana.

Still, Liverpool have perhaps been more strongly linked with Mamardashvili, with Fabrizio Romano recently posting the below about the Reds wanting to sign the 23-year-old for the future, with him spending time at Bournemouth before later replacing Alisson as their number one…

?? Liverpool have agreed personal terms with Giorgi Mamardashvili. He’s keen on the move even spending one or two years elsewhere on loan.

Bournemouth open to signing him, then he’d become #LFC new GK after Alisson.

Now, however, there could be real doubts about Liverpool going through with this as The Athletic claim it’s against the rules for a Premier League club to sign a player and then immediately loan him out to another Premier League club.

The report adds that LFC continue to hold talks over Mamardashvili, but it’s clear he won’t come cheap as Valencia hold out for something around £38million, so it remains to be seen if the Merseyside giants will go ahead with that kind of fee for a player who isn’t even being targeted with this season in mind anyway.

Mamardashvili transfer: Should he join United over Liverpool?

It’s smart to plan for the future, of course, but Liverpool also surely need new players who can strengthen their team now, and that might be another reason for Mamardashvili to choose United anyway.

Giorgi Mamardashvili wouldn’t be able to join Liverpool and then move to Bournemouth on loan

Onana struggled at Old Trafford last season, so it seems more likely that Mamardashvili could be number one for Erik ten Hag’s side, whereas there’s surely little chance of him getting in ahead of Alisson for Liverpool any time soon.

MUFC have already had a busy summer signing Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Leny Yoro, but many fans would surely welcome the arrival of a new goalkeeper too.
