Centre-back Gabriel was a colossus at both ends of the pitch. He scored the winner in the north London derby at Spurs before another headed goal in a 2-2 draw at Manchester City. In three September appearances, he had six shots, the joint-most of any defender, as well as making five blocks and winning 12 duels for unbeaten Arsenal.

Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool)

P4 W3 D0 L1 G0 A0

The Dutchman played every minute of Liverpool’s matches as they stormed to the top of the table. Impressing in the No 6 role, he won possession a league-high 29 times in September, as well as completing the most passes (231) of any midfielder, and winning 28 duels, the sixth-most of all players.

Raul Jimenez (Fulham)

P3 W2 D1 L0 G3 A0

The striker scored in all three of his September matches as Fulham went unbeaten. He netted the opening goals in a 1-1 draw with West Ham United and a 3-1 win over Newcastle, before his penalty in Matchweek 6 ended Nottingham Forest’s unbeaten start and made him only the second Mexican in Premier League history to reach 50 goals.

Dwight McNeil (Everton)

P3 W1 D1 L1 G3 A1

Midfielder McNeil was directly involved in four of Everton’s five goals in the month. He got a goal and an assist in a 3-2 loss at Aston Villa before scoring twice, his first being a stunner from long range, to inspire a 2-1 turnaround win over Crystal Palace to give his side a first victory of the season.

Cole Palmer (Chelsea)

P4 W3 D1 L0 G5 A1

Palmer’s five goals and six goal involvements were both the most of all Premier League players. After an assist in a draw with Crystal Palace, he scored in a 3-0 win at West Ham before making history in a 4-2 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, becoming the first player ever to score four goals in the first half of a Premier League match.

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

P3 W2 D1 L0 G4 A1

Only Palmer got more goal involvements than the five of Watkins, who scored or assisted in each of Villa’s three matches. He inspired a 3-2 turnaround win over Everton with two goals, before kick-starting another comeback victory with the equaliser in a 3-1 win over Wolves. Watkins ended the month with a goal and an assist in a 2-2 draw at Ipswich Town.
