The race for Premier League top six is on.
Three weeks today we reach the end of this 2023/24 season.
A very eventful Saturday, especially at St James’ Park.
These were the results yesterday in the Premier League.
West Ham 2 Liverpool 2
Fulham 1 Crystal Palace 1
Man U 1 Burnley 1
Newcastle United 5 Sheffield United 1
Wolves 2 Luton 1
Everton 1 Brentford 0
Aston Villa 2 Chelsea 2
(Playing today – Bournemouth v Brighton, Tottenham v Arsenal, Forest v Man City)
This is the updated Premier League table on Sunday (28 April 2024) morning:
The results yesterday have seen things significantly change in the betting for who will get a top six spot.
Listed below are the updated general Premier League odds now available from the various bookies to finish top six this 2023/24 season (in brackets what the odds were before Saturday’s matches):
11/10 Newcastle United (2/1)
6/4 Man U (4/6)
5/1 Chelsea (5/1)
100/1 Brighton (66/1)
475/1 West Ham (500/1)
So Newcastle United replacing Man U as favourites in the eyes of bookies and punters, with Chelsea next best if the top two both falter.
Newcastle United have got one less point than Man U but have a massively better goal difference and as you can see below, a far kinder remaining schedule of matches, at least on paper.
These are all the remaining fixtures for the three clubs fighting for Premier League top six:
Thursday 2 May – Chelsea v Tottenham
Saturday 4 May – Burnley v Newcastle
Sunday 5 May – Chelsea v West Ham
Monday 6 May – Crystal Palace v Man U
Saturday 11 May – Newcastle v Brighton, Forest v Chelsea
Sunday 12 May – Man U v Arsenal
Wednesday 15 May – Man U v Newcastle, Brighton v Chelsea
Sunday 19 May – Brentford v Newcastle, Brighton v Man U, Chelsea v Bournemouth
It is a simple equation, if Newcastle United win their last four matches, they are guaranteed sixth place.
If Eddie Howe’s team draw against Man U and win the other three, then I think that would also ensure sixth place, as I can’t see Man U winning all of their other three games and even if Chelsea won all their five, NUFC would surely have a better goal difference.
Whilst if Newcastle United could beat Man U and win at least two of the other three, then that would also I believe give us sixth. As Chelsea aren’t winning all of their last five matches.
