Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov was asked about his old club making a move for Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres after hiring Ruben Amorim as their head coach.
Gyokeres has had an incredible start to the season, scoring 20 goals in 16 matches for Sporting, who are unbeaten at the top of the Primeira Liga.
Amorim’s side take on Man City in the Champions League tonight and Gyokeres will be the biggest threat – not only – in attack.
Berbatov has been impressed with the Sweden international after his electrifying start to the season.
With United struggling to take their chances in front of goal at the moment, it’s no wonder Berbatov can see why they would be targeting a move for Gyokeres in the new year.
Berbatov referred to how United are 18th for goals scored in the Premier League, which he described as “embarrassing” for a club of our size.
The Bulgarian pundit didn’t hide the fact he thinks Gyokeres would be a clear upgrade on the players currently at United, including Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.
“I think there is a special connection with the coach so maybe we probably are going to see him in a United shirt,” Berbatov said on Monday Night Football.
When asked if he would welcome the signing, Berbatov added: “From what he is showing right now, I think yes.
“Our strikers at the moment are not producing and scoring goals. We’re 18th in the league [for goals scored] which is embarrassing for a stature of a club like United.
“So this is a position that I would like to see improvement.”

Barcelona have already been linked with a move, with reports suggesting they would offer a player in exchange to Sporting Lisbon.
The Swede has a release clause worth €100 million, but it is understood that Sporting would negotiate a fee slightly lower than that fee.
It bodes well that Gyokeres has enjoyed his football under Amorim more than any other manager in his career. His rise to prominence tells us that.
