The leadership of the Peoples Redemption Party on Tuesday urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his economic reforms, saying the current hardship is becoming unbearable for the masses.

The PRP National Chairman, Falalu Bello, made the appeal in a statement in Abuja titled ‘President Tinubu, Your Policies Killing Nigerians.’

Bello also raised concerns over the recent comments credited to key figures in Tinubu’s administration and members of the Bretton Woods Institutions—the International Monetary Fund and World Bank regarding the debate on the reforms.

He said that Vice President Shetima could say there are no alternatives to the ‘harmful’ policies, arguing that it was a contradiction to the basic tenets of economics, which advocate for the exploration of alternatives in addressing socio-economic challenges

He said, “Such statements, especially coming from someone of his status in the current administration, are not only misleading but also indicative of a severe disconnect from the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians today. The population has been urged to endure these difficult times with the promise of relief on the horizon.

“However, we see no tangible evidence of this assurance in the actions of President Tinubu, his cabinet or the broader government apparatus. Instead, we witness a continuation of profligate lifestyles, excessive spending and the dissemination of dubious economic statistics that do little to alleviate the suffering of the Nigerian populace.”

Continuing, Bello noted that many Nigerians are worried that the substantial revenue garnered from the removal of subsidies and currency devaluation has not translated into the promised provision of social amenities.

He fumed that all the Federal Government kept reeling out were claims of slight reductions in budget deficits, which did nothing to address the issue of wasteful spending and ostentatious lifestyle in the leadership.

The PRP national chairman said he equally found it disheartening to hear representatives of the World Bank commend Tinubu’s policies which they want the nation to sustain for about 15 years.

He said, “Such recommendations are unbecoming of any institution that claims to prioritise the welfare of the people. We in the PRP firmly believe that there are viable and humane alternatives that can steer our nation towards sustainable economic recovery. Even recent reports from the Bretton Woods Institutions indicate an increase in poverty levels, underscoring the detrimental impact of poorly advised policies.

“We strongly urge Tinubu to recalibrate his approach, implement a governance framework that prioritizes the welfare of citizens, and embrace homegrown policies that reflect the realities of our people rather than succumbing to externally imposed, anti-people measures that stifle progress.

“It is imperative that we act swiftly. Our nation is at a critical juncture, with time running out for meaningful intervention. Mr. President, it is time to act decisively for the sake of the nation’s future. Let us rescue our people from the grip of despair so that you may indeed dance before the music comes to an end.”
