Chairman, Police Service Commission, Hashimu Argungu
The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu (retd), has called for a transformative approach to journalism in Nigeria, urging practitioners to use the power of their profession to unite the nation and drive its development.
He emphasised the need to move away from “guerilla journalism” and embrace developmental journalism that collaborates with government and citizens to build an egalitarian and prosperous society.
Argungu delivered this message through the Head of Press and Public Relations of the Commission, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, at the 8th Nigerian Union of Journalists Triennial National Delegates Congress in Owerri, on Wednesday.
“Argungu urged journalists to serve as the watchdogs of democracy, promoting checks and balances while maintaining integrity. He stated that journalists, like Caesar’s wife, should rise above suspicion and focus on uniting the nation.
“He acknowledged the vital role of journalists in supporting the government to achieve success, which he said would translate into tangible dividends for Nigeria’s democracy.
“He also commended the government for allowing journalists to operate freely and without hindrance, while urging media professionals to reciprocate by adhering to the rules governing their conduct”, Ani said in a statement he signed.
He said Argungu reiterated the PSC’s commitment to supporting journalism and fostering a partnership with the media in the nation’s interest.
