Dream Bigger. This is the slogan that PSG insisted on a lot a few years ago. Two words that perfectly symbolised the excessive ambitions of the capital club. And on the national scene, it is clear that the Parisians have managed to start a cycle of brutal domination, leaving only the crumbs to the other Ligue 1 clubs. All this while waiting to finally obtain this long-awaited Grail, namely the Champions League title.
However, and this has not escaped anyone’s attention, PSG has lost many stars and players who weighed heavily on the scales in terms of marketing and media in recent years. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Neymar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé have left and have not been replaced, for the moment at least, by players with a similar status. And on paper, the Parisian squad has therefore lost a little in prestige and attractiveness over the years. A fact that worries some people internally, who have for example noticed that the club has lost more than 6 million subscribers on its account Instagramexplains the daily The Team.
A decision taken into account
But for the Parisian decision-makers, it is a fully assumed strategy, indicates the newspaper. This relative absence of flashy names in the squad is desired by the management, it is not imposed. The latter has notably been tired of the whims of some of these stars, overpaid in its eyes, in recent years. It is even a less bling bling project and more based on youth and training that the club’s masterminds put forward during the discussions for the acquisition of a stake by Arctos Partners in the club last December.
By recruiting players like Neymar, the goal of the Qatari leaders was to make a big impact from the start by recruiting some nice players to make themselves known and to create solid foundations for the club and the PSG brand, before turning to this slightly less flashy project. There was also a desire, according to the newspaper, to highlight and promote the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The players targeted by the club this summer – João Neves, Nico Williams or Désiré Doué – also seem to be fully in line with this new strategy of recruiting young players, who could become real stars within the club. It remains to be seen whether this will be enough to finally obtain this long-awaited Champions League…
