PSG: Luis Enrique’s strong decision for Gianluigi Donnarumma

For 3 seasons now, Gianluigi Donnarumma has been PSG’s goalkeeper. The Italian goalkeeper spent just one season competing with Keylor Navas before settling permanently into a number one role. His first year under Mauricio Pochettino was not particularly convincing, far from it. It must be said that the management of the Argentine technician did not help Donnarumma to gain confidence. Since then, under Christophe Galtier and now Luis Enrique, the former Milan goalkeeper has played a series of matches in a starting role. And if he is capable of being impressive, he struggles to really convince the Parisian supporters.

So much so that some were even calling for a new goalkeeper for this summer. And this is going to be the case. With the departures of Keylor Navas and Alexandre Letellier, PSG has already secured a first recruit. This is the Russian goalkeeper Matvey Safonov. The number one goalkeeper in the Russian championship and his team has already passed his medical examination and will sign a sum of 20 million euros from Krasnodar. A profile very similar to that of Donnarumma and which was surprising for a number 2 role at PSG. But according to the information from The TeamLuis Enrique is hiding behind this choice…

Donnarumma could lose his number one spot

According to information from the French daily, the Spanish coach has simply decided that there will be no hierarchy at all next season. To put it simply, Donnarumma is no longer PSG’s number one goalkeeper. The management conveyed this message to Donnarumma, Tenas and Safonov before the international break. A decision which was little appreciated by the Italian goalkeeper who never hid feeling better when he experienced stability as number one. But this is not the wish of its management. And the arrival of Safonov, who has qualities similar to Donnarumma, goes in this direction.

To convince the Russian goalkeeper to arrive, PSG did not sell him a number two role. And this decision by Luis Enrique is therefore likely to be very appreciated by Safonov. On the other hand, Arnau Tenas, who would have reason to rejoice, does not seem to be delighted either. According to The Team, the former Barça goalkeeper wants to be loaned to La Liga to get playing time. But Luis Enrique really likes his profile and his quality of footwork. He wants to rely on him and does not want to let him go on loan as he has wanted to do for several weeks. PSG’s goalkeeper work is underway. And Luis Enrique, who likes competition, therefore decided to turn everything upside down.
