PSG, the nightmare

Four years ago, the capital club was in the Champions League final for the first time in its history. Except that it was Bayern Munich who ended up lifting the “big-eared” cup.

The 2019-20 Champions League final was originally scheduled to take place on May 30 at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul (Turkey). It will now be held on August 23 at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon (Portugal) due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

To reach the final of this unique Final 8 held in the Portuguese capital, Paris Saint-Germain eliminated Atalanta in the quarter-finals (2-1) and RB Leipzig in the semi-finals (3-0). The Red and Blues therefore had only one step left to climb, against Bayern Munich, to win their long-awaited first star. After a fairly lively start to the match, the match would give way to numerous fouls and too much technical waste.

PSG “betrayed” by a “Titi”

The only goal of the match came just before the hour mark. As is too often the case in PSG history, it was a former member of the “house” who scored against his former club, the one where he had been trained. Completely forgotten by Thilo Kehrer, Kingsley Coman sent a diving header into Keylor Navas’ goal. Far too imprecise, Thomas Tuchel’s men were unable to come back into the game and failed in their quest for the Holy Grail.

Ironically, the German coach would win the C1 with Chelsea the following year. “For me the favourite was really Bayern Munich, he recalled in the documentary ‘Bayern Munich: Behind The Legend’. A typical performance wouldn’t have been enough to beat the team in the best form at the moment. After all, it’s still football, anything can happen in a match. When a player like Coman starts scoring with his head, you know that your luck has changed and it’s over for you. Or maybe it’s destiny or maybe Bayern simply deserved the victory.
