With Barcelona looking for a new manager to replace Xavi Hernandez at the end of the season, the name of Luis Enrique has been doing the rounds quite a bit of late.

The 53-year-old, who is currently in charge at PSG, enjoyed a successful phase at Barça between 2014 and 2017, even leading the club to a special treble.

As such, Barcelona president Joan Laporta and sporting director see Lucho as their preferred candidate to succeed Xavi at the end of the season.

PSG to open contract renewals

Amidst the growing chatter, PSG are ready to take action and ensure that Luis Enrique does not leave the club in the summer, as per reports relayed by Mundo Deportivo.

When he arrived at PSG last summer, the Spanish tactician signed a contract for two seasons until 2025, plus an optional third year.

Satisfied with his work, even more so after qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Champions League, the PSG management plan to activate the clause to extend his contract by one year until 2026 and they intend to start talks immediately.

PSG want to give Enrique time and continuity after chopping and changing their managers in the recent past.

That, coupled with Barcelona’s interest, has seemingly prompted Les Parisiens to take actions swiftly as they want to open talks to extend Enrique’s contract by another year until 2026.

For his part, the former Spain manager remains committed to the PSG project and is not looking to return to Barcelona despite the interest.

So, it is unlikely that there will be any complications in the contract extension talks between the two parties.

As for Barça, they are looking at several other targets, including Hansi Flick, Roberto De Zerbi, Julian Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel, and even Ruben Amorim.
