Pupil killed as classroom collapses in Yobe school

A yet-to-be-identified student was reportedly killed on Thursday after parts of a classroom block collapsed at the Government Girls Science and Technical College in the Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The incident was said to have occurred during class hours.

The students were standing in the corridor of the classroom when the roof caved in on them, a report by the Nigeria Television Authority posted on X.com indicated.

An unascertained number of students were also said to have been injured in the incident after being trapped under the rubble.

The victims were attended to by emergency responders who later arrived at the scene of the incident.

The emergency responders were reportedly joined by the school officials to evacuate the students who were immediately taken to a specialist hospital for medical treatment.

In one of the pictures posted by the news platform, the Commissioner of Basic and Secondary Education, Prof Abba Adam, and the Executive Secretary of the state Science and Technical Education Board, Dauda Atiyaye, were seen at the scene of the incident for an on-the-spot assessment.

They were also said to have visited the specialist hospital where the injured students were receiving medical care.

The cause of the collapse had yet to be determined as of the time this report was filed.

The Government Girls’ Science and Technical College Potiskum is a public science and technical boarding school established in 1979 to provide girl-child education in Yobe State. It is situated about 100 kilometres away from Damaturu, the state capital.

PUNCH Metro reported that an explosion occurred at the Chemical Market in Talata-Mafara in Zamfara State on Tuesday.

The explosion was triggered by the careless disposal of a cigarette remnant of gunpowder, leading to a massive fire. The explosion resulted in significant damage, affecting 50 individuals with varying degrees of injuries.
