A key struggle for footballers joining Manchester United over the past decade is that they fail to deal with the expectations that weigh heavily down on their shoulders.
It should be expected when these players are chosen to represent one of the biggest football clubs in the world.
That said, few clubs get the same level of scrutiny from the media as United. It’s usually aimed at managers, players and our sacred Old Trafford stadium, which now faces an uncertain future amid plans for a regeneration project.
There have been too many letdowns in recruitment under the Glazer ownership. Fans can only hope to see big improvements now that INEOS have taken control of sporting operations.
Morten Hjulmand identified as a midfield option for Manchester United
Photo by Richard Pelham/Getty ImagesFormer Denmark goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen claims fellow countryman and Sporting Lisbon ace Morten Hjulmand would be a good fit for the Reds.
The Danish international, who is already team-mates with Rasmus Hojlund and Christian Eriksen, was linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer but it never materialised.
United signed Uruguay international Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain instead in an attempt to bolster Erik ten Hag’s options in midfield.
Sorensen told Casino24.dk (as cited by the Manchester Evening News): “Morten Hjulmand is a high energy, box to box midfielder and shown that in his pairing with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. He can get among the goals and also do the dirty work. He has had a quick rise with Sporting and won the league, he’s got great experience already. He’s still only 25 and has been a great addition to the national team so it’s no surprise that clubs bigger than Sporting are looking at him, all the potential is there. He’s been linked to Manchester United and although it would be hard, I think he would be able to reach expectations, they are interested in him for a reason and it would be a great move for Danish football also. I’m sure he’d be a good player at Manchester United, he wouldn’t be out of sorts.”
Hjulmand is already on United’s radar and it may be an option their revisit in the future.
The last time we signed a player from Sporting it was Bruno Fernandes and that worked out well!
