Barry Ferguson has emerged as the odds-on favourite to be named the new Rangers manager.

The former Rangers captain is now 1/2, ahead of Issame Charai, to be named as Philippe Clement's successor at Ibrox after the Belgian was sacked as manager on Sunday after falling to a 2-0 home defeat by St Mirren on Saturday.

Clement was given his marching orders from the Glasgow side after falling to back to back humbling home defeats, missing the chance to capitalise on Celtic's defeat earlier in the day, leaving Rangers 13 points off the pace in the title race with only 11 games to play.

The former Monaco manager took over the team in October 2023 following the sacking of Michael Beale, with the side already seven points off the pace of league leaders Celtic only a couple of months into the season.

The Belgian could only achieve a second placed league finish last time out behind Old Firm rivals Celtic who won the title by eight points, though did deliver a Scottish League Cup triumph in his first season in charge.

Barry Ferguson is widely expected to be the man to replace Clement in the Ibrox hotseat, the 47-year-old joined the club's academy as a player and went on to make over 400 appearances for the his boyhood side across two spells, winning 15 trophies for the club, including five league titles.

Ferguson has been without a managerial job since resigning from Alloa while in League One in February 2022.

Issame Charai, the current Rangers assistant manager, is the second favourite to be a given a promotion to first team manager, less than four weeks after making the move to Glasgow from his role as second in command of French club Strasbourg.

The 42-year-old Belgian has never been manager of a senior side before but has been working in coaching since the age of 30, but only managed five games in partnership with his compatriot Clement at Ibrox before the latter's sacking.

Other names linked with the job include the prospect of a return to the club for Steven Gerrard, who spent more than three years as manager of the club between 2018 and 2021, delivering the club their most recent league title back in his final full season at the club.

The former Liverpool player has been without a job since leaving his role in Saudi Arabia last month, while former Rangers defender Russell Martin also has his name in the hat following his sacking by Southampton in December.

Martin impressed in the Championship last season, achieving promotion with the Saints in his first season in charge, but couldn't carry their form into the Premier League this season.
