Ranking Member on the Youth and Sports Committee of Parliament, Wisdom Kobena Woyome has justified the decision of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to relieve Black Stars Coach, Chris Hughton of his duties after the poor performance at 2023 AFCON.

The team exited the competition after going winless with two draws and a defeat in its group stage matches obtaining only 2 points out of a possible 9 points.

This year’s lackluster performance marks the third consecutive poor performance of the team in the Nations Cup competition since 2019.

Following the abysmal performance, the Ghana Football Association in a statement announced its decision to dismiss the head coach of the teams and also dissolve the entire technical team.

The decision by the football association has received mixed reactions from Ghanaians. Whilst some believe it is a step in the right direction, others are of the opinion that there are serious structural problems with Ghana football hence a mere dismissal of the national team coach will not resolve the issues.

But the MP for South Dayi and the Ranking Member on the Youth and Sports Committee of Parliament agrees with the decision to sack the coach.

According to the MP, the performance and conduct of Chris Hughton was questionable and below expectation hence his dismissal is a step in the right direction.

Speaking in an interview with JoyNews, the MP explained that, “you have hired the services of somebody because of what you think the person is made of. What is the interest in hiring that service? Because you think you will want to also succeed because the common target is to win at the tournament and get the laurels, probably get a cup.  That is the target. That is the aim.  Anything short of that is under performance.”

“The only word I think I heard from somebody was that you say you are taking responsibility for what happened. It obviously means you have not performed so then if you have been sacked so be it,” he added.
