Manchester United defender Raphael Varane is confident fellow Frenchman Willy Kambwala has a bright future ahead of him at Old Trafford.
The 19-year-old joined the club’s academy in October 2020 and was handed his debut earlier this season in a 2-0 defeat at West Ham.
Although the result didn’t go United’s way, Erik ten Hag was clearly impressed by what he had seen from Kambwala. He has since made three further appearances – as well as making the matchday squad on six separate occasions in the Premier League.
Varane’s contract is set to expire in the summer – with no decision made over a new deal just yet – but the World Cup winner has sung the praises of Kambwala, who he believes can have a bright future in the game.
“He shows his qualities,” Varane told ManUtd.com. “I think, in the future, he will play more games and keep improving.
“He’s still very young, but he shows his quality. We have trust in him and he has a great future.”
In the lead up to today’s game against Luton Town, Ten Hag told reporters that he believes United have more players in the academy that are capable of breaking through into the first team.
The emergence of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho in the first team will only encourage other academy members to push on.
