Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson feels Manchester United centre-back Raphael Varane would be a good signing for the Blues.

Varane was signed by the Red Devils from Real Madrid in 2021, but since then, he has struggled with injuries and poor form, and he is expected to leave on a free transfer this summer.

Midway through the season, Man United decided against invoking a contract extension for Varane.

The French defender has been linked with a move back to Real Madrid in the summer. However, Johnson feels he would be a good addition to Chelsea who have suffered defensively this season.

“Good players like that don’t come around often and they certainly come around less often on a free transfer,” Johnson told Betfred, as quoted by The Mirror.

“I know he’s not the Varane he was three or four years ago but he’s still a bloody good player.

“Yes, he’s had his injury problems but that’s what outweighs the transfer fee – if you’re buying him on a free and he’s only playing 40% of the games, then that’s still a good deal to do.

“As we saw with Thiago Silva, those sort of players who have done everything, played for top teams and clubs, they get the attention of the dressing room and they’re the big names that the younger players want to look up to and obviously they’re great to have around.

Raphael Varane looks likely to leave Man United.

“If you have got a chance with Varane on a free transfer and he’s only going to play 50% of the games, I still think it’s a good deal.”

Varane is heading out of Man United

The Red Devils are looking to sign a new centre-back in the summer and Varane is likely to be on his way out of the club.

Chelsea are set to lose an experienced centre-back in Thiago Silva this summer and Varane would be a worthy replacement of the Brazilian.

Man United defender can bring experience to Chelsea

The Blues have the second youngest squad in the Premier League and someone like Varane, who has won multiple Champions League titles, would add much needed experience to the team.

The former Real Madrid defender would become a free agent so it makes sense if Chelsea make a move for him.

Mauricio Pochettino has recently expressed his desire to sign experienced players for the club in order to add more composure to the team in challenging situations.
