Real Madrid are in the process of rebuilding their midfield.

Although Carlo Ancelotti has Jude Bellingham, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga among his midfield options, the Italian is determined to sign another.

Toni Kroos’ retirement earlier in the summer saw the German draw a line under a trophy-littered 10 years in Madrid.

And even though the 34-year-old is impossible to replace, Ancelotti is prepared to try.

Real Madrid plotting surprise Barcelona raid

The 64-year-old has been linked with Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz, who could cost as much as £110 million (€130 million). However, according to Real Madrid Exclusivo, a cheaper alternative option could present itself next year in the form of Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.

Frenkie De Jong has been linked with a surprise move to Real Madrid.

The Dutch midfielder has failed to live up to expectations at the Nou Camp following his blockbuster transfer from Ajax in 2019, and now with less than two years left on his deal, the 27-year-old, who is currently ruled out with an ankle injury, could be more attainable than ever.

Although Barcelona seldom do business with rivals Madrid there could be a rare willingness to trade De Jong due to his status as the side’s highest earner where he picks up a reported £295,000-per week.

And with the midfielder’s performances failing to reflect his salary, Barcelona are unlikely to offer a renewal, which could force their hand when it comes to negotiations, even if they are with their La Liga nemesis.
