Real Madrid: towards an incredible exchange

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti made it clear on Wednesday that he is happy with French defender Ferland Mendy, but talk of the Frenchman’s departure persists.

Mendy has one year left on his contract this summer, and it has been said that Los Blancos have been keen to move him over the past 12 months. Ancelotti called it “best defensive fullback in the world” and praised Mendy, who has returned to the team of late. Still, it is common knowledge that Alphonso Davies is one of Real Madrid’s top targets for the summer, and the club intends to try and sign the Canadian from Bayern Munich for a fee of 40-50 millions of euros. La Cadena SER claims Real Madrid could try to cut the deal by swapping Mendy for Davies.

In Germany, BILD (via Diario AS) claims that Davies has turned down 5 renewal offers from Bayern. However, the Bavarian giants do not want to be intimidated by Real’s interest and offer him an annual salary of 13 to 14 million euros. The Merengue would have asked him not to extend in order to facilitate the conclusion of an agreement. Nevertheless, Bayern will still try to conclude.

It is not yet clear whether the player or Bayern would be open to the idea, and the latest news indicates that Mendy is keen to stay in the Spanish capital. If Bayern agreed to such a deal, they would get a very different full-back, but with a significantly lower salary. Mendy has been hampered by persistent injuries over the past two years, which is part of why Los Blancos are keen to find a replacement for the 28-year-old.
