Manchester United were dealt a fresh injury blow in the second half of their 1-1 draw with Fenerbahce in the Europa League.
Antony, who came on as a substitute, made a gesture to the bench just minutes after coming on.
It appeared as though the Brazilian winger felt a tweak (hopefully not a tear) before dropping to the floor.
A stretcher came on to remove Antony from the pitch, meaning he could have no impact on the game whatsoever.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Erik ten Hag admitted it was ‘sad’ to see Antony come off so quickly. He revealed how hard the winger had been working in training to get back to his best after a run of poor form.
“It’s really unlucky for him,” Ten Hag stated, as per ManUtd.com. “I feel real compassion for him, when he worked so hard in training.
“His training performances are that good that he deserved to come on. When you have to come off so quickly, that is really sad to see. Hopefully, it’s not too bad, we have to wait 24 hours for what the assessment is.”
The latest injury setback could see Antony sidelined but we must wait on tests before getting ahead of ourselves.
Antony may not be the most popular figure at United, due to his underwhelming performances and petulant behaviour at times, but he has suffered with horrible luck tonight and we hope to see him back fully fit soon.
United take on West Ham on Sunday and we can expect a further update on Antony in the coming days.
Antony tipped to leave United on loan in January
Photo by Michael Regan/Getty ImagesReports suggest United are prepared to let Antony join another club on loan in January.
This would suggest patience is wearing thin on Antony, who Ten Hag brought to the club with him from Ajax.
The preference, however, is for Antony to remain in Europe rather than return to Brazil, where he would have no shortage of offers.
United reportedly feel they wouldn’t make half of their investment back on Antony, which is why he could seek a loan move in the coming months.
