Even before the first iteration of its first movie came out, it was clear Zack Snyder has been thinking long-term when it comes to Rebel Moon. More movies, a mobile game, comics, even TTRPGs–if there’s a medium that could hold a slice of his science-fantasy epic, Snyder’s determined to bring it there. Unsurprisingly, that includes a podcast, which takes after the moviees and brings several high-profile actors along for the ride.
Specifically, the narrative fiction podcast Seneschal: A Rebel Moon Story will tell the story of the original Jimmy, a robot voiced in the film by Anthony Hopkins. Set centuries before the movies, the prequel focuses on a pair of inventors tasked by the king Ulmer to make him a warrior knight that’ll help him maintain control of the universe. In-universe, Jimmys were made as guards for the royalty of the Motherworld, but you know how it is. A robot built for violencen eventually finds someone (usually a woman) that gives them a soul and spurs them into heroism. In this instance, it’s Fallout’s Ella Purnell as Raina, in what’s billed as “tale of creation, ambition, faith, and betrayal.”
Alongside Purnell, the cast also includes Lost’s Naveen Andrews and Alfred Enoch (How to Get Away with Murder) as inventors Grigory and Adwin, Peter Serafinowicz (John Wick 2) as Bartholomew, and Jason Isaacs as Ulmer himself. If you’re a Rebel head who’s super big on the lore, this’ll surely be your jam, particularly since it’s another addition to the would-be franchise beyond the extended and renamed (and supposedly gorier) cuts hitting in early August. For anyone else, maybe it’ll be an interesting listen to see how Snyder’s work fares in new format and without his signature visual style.
Seneschal will hit podcast platforms on July 29 and wrap on September 2.
