A new report provides an update on Cameron Grimes’ WWE release.

On April 23, Cameron Grimes, also known as Trevor Lee, announced that he had been released by WWE. He shared the news in an emotional video on social media. Grimes’ release came amid a wave of cuts over the past week. Jinder Mahal, Veer, Xia Li, and other stars were also released.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful (via Fightful Select) reports that Cameron Grimes’ release was unexpected by many in WWE. given his skill set and track record. It was noted that these did not match the others who had been released, as Grimes had gotten over in NXT, and he was credited with improving in the ring. Sapp also writes that the release was a surprise because Grimes was at WWE SmackDown on April 19, and he was a regular at TV tapings.

Furthermore, Sapp writes that Cameron Grimes is expected to get “booked heavily” on the independent scene. Some top promotions had already expressed their intent to book him.

Grimes signed with WWE in 2019, and he had a successful run in NXT. During his run there, he won the NXT North American Championship. Grimes moved to the WWE main roster in May 2023 but was not used prominently during his time on SmackDown.
