Robert Lewandowski has been one of Barcelona’s biggest bets in the transfer market in recent years.

The Poland international has been a marquee addition to the ranks at Barça and helped the club lift the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup in his debut season, even winning the Pichichi Trophy.

However, if things had gone differently, Lewandowski would have been plying his trade for Barcelona’s arch-rivals Real Madrid, who were keen on acquiring his services a few years ago.

Real Madrid’s interest in Lewandowski

Catalunya Radio (h/t SPORT) has recently revealed that Real Madrid had approached Lewandowski during his time at Bayern Munich.

About seven years ago, at the start of 2017, Real Madrid wanted to reinforce its ranks in the goalscoring department. This was before Karim Benzema’s explosive performances and the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The report adds that Real Madrid had even tried to close an agreement with Lewandowski’s representative. But only a couple of hours later, Lewandowski offered Real Madrid a resounding ‘no’.

Why Lewandowski rejected Real Madrid

While joining Real Madrid is a dream for many footballers across the globe, Lewandowski was not too keen on moving to Santiago Bernabeu in the middle of the season.

The report highlights how the Pole is a meticulous footballer, with attention to detail. As such, he felt moving to Real Madrid in the middle of the season would have been a risk.

In this case, Lewandowski was ideally hoping for a high-performance gym in his house to continue his development. But knowing it was impossible in such a short span of time, the forward realised it would have delayed his adaption to life at the Bernabeu.

As a result, the Pole ended up rejecting a move to Real Madrid and continued to play for Bayern Munich. He would come to Spain eventually, joining Barcelona in the summer of 2022.
