New reports provide an update on Daniel Garcia‘s contract status with AEW.
MJF brutally attacked Daniel Garcia on the July 3 episode of AEW Dynamite, and he was stretchered off. AEW then announced that Garcia was under care for cervical injuries.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer discussed the situation. Alvarez said that AEW was aware that Daniel Garcia might not come back, so the angle would be a way to prepare for his potential exit. He said that Garcia had been thinking about his future, and he did not think Garcia’s return was a guarantee. (H/t Ian Carey of F4WOnline.com)
Alvarez’s comments came in response to Ibou of WrestlePurists, who noted that AEW had been protecting themselves with the MJF angle; if Garcia came back, he would be able to jump into a storyline, but the beatdown would serve as a clear on-screen exit.
He’s fine. The company is protecting themselves while he hopefully dots his eyes and crosses his T’s. If he stays, he’s jumping into a feud with Max. If he leaves, then he was Ricochet’d.
They’d like him to stay and feel that he will. https://t.co/CMVxitIojC
Ibou also wrote that Daniel Garcia had not re-signed, and while he had interest from other companies, AEW was confident that he would stay.
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful (via Fightful Select) has reported that Garcia’s contract was set to expire in the fall of 2024.
Garcia previously signed with AEW in 2021. During his time in the company, he had a prominent run as a member of the Jericho Appreciation Society. He is a former ROH Pure Champion.
WrestleZone will provide more information as it becomes available.
