Reps celebrate speaker’s 61st birthday, national honour

The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, congratulated the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, on the occasion of his 61st birthday anniversary.

Members elected on the platform of eight different political parties also felicitated with the Zaria-born lawmaker on the conferment of the Commander of the Federal Republic on him by President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday.

In a statement issued by the spokesman for the House, Akin Rotimi, the legislative body commended Abbas for his leadership and commitment to the development of Nigeria.

The statement read in part: “Speaker Abbas has consistently demonstrated the qualities of a nation-builder through his humility, accessibility, and extraordinary capacity for consensus-building.

“His leadership has been instrumental in guiding the most politically diverse House in the 4th Republic, bringing about meaningful legislative innovations and ensuring that all voices are represented in the democratic process.

“As the fourth citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Speaker Abbas continues to discharge his duties with great responsibility and vision, championing reforms that advance the interests of all Nigerians.

“His leadership style is inclusive and characterised by a steady hand that fosters unity and cooperation among members of the Assembly.”

The lawmakers also expressed joy at the recent conferment of the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic on Speaker Abbas by the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. This prestigious award is a fitting tribute to a distinguished statesman whose contributions to the progress of our nation are invaluable.

“His legacy of service continues to inspire not only this Assembly but also the entire nation.”

The statement further commended the Speaker for his decision to spend his day with the less privileged members of society.

“True to his character, Speaker Abbas has chosen to mark his birthday by spending time with vulnerable Nigerians in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. This selfless gesture reflects his unwavering commitment to the welfare of the marginalised and his deep sense of responsibility as a servant-leader.”

The statement also quoted the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, as saying, “Since the inauguration of the 10th Assembly in June 2023, you (Abbas) have demonstrated profound dedication to advancing our democracy and promoting good governance through effective legislation.”
