Republicans Officially Select Donald Trump As Their Presidential Nominee

Republicans officially confirmed Donald Trump as their nominee for the 2024 election.

As delegates went through the roll call on the floor, Trump announced his running mate: J.D. Vance, the Ohio senator.

After Florida’s vote put Trump over the top in the 1,250 delagates needed, the sound of Celebration played through the Fiserv Forum.

This is the third time that Trump has won the GOP nomination, but a sharp contrast to the first. On the first day of the convention in 2016, there was still delegate turbulence over the rules for the convention. Days later, one of Trump’s rivals for the nomination that cycle, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), gave a speech in which he told delegates to “vote their conscience” and declined to endorse his candidacy. Cruz later did, and has a speaking slot later this week at this convention.
