The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a clear warning to newly appointed Permanent Secretaries, urging them to avoid making excuses for any failures in their duties.
Speaking during their inauguration in Abuja on Thursday, Wike stressed that those unable to deliver on their responsibilities should consider resigning.
Wike highlighted that President Bola Tinubu has already done his part, and it is now up to the appointees to “work with us, work with me, and identify programmes that can make the youth entrepreneurial.” He emphasized the importance of these efforts in helping the youth mitigate the challenges they face, warning, “if anything goes wrong, you will be held responsible.”
Among those inaugurated were Joy Okeke from the South East, Rotimi Ajayi from the South West, and Nancy Nathan from the North East as Permanent Secretaries. Additionally, Abdullahi Ango was appointed as the pioneer Mandate Secretary of the Youth Development Secretariat of the FCT Administration, and Gardiya Bawa was inaugurated as Solicitor General/Permanent Secretary for the Legal Services Secretariat of the FCTA.
Wike underscored the need for accountability, stating, “Everybody must know that you must account for every assignment given to you.” He further advised, “If you know you have no capacity to work, it is better you resign now, at least you will leave with the emoluments of a former Permanent Secretary.”
He acknowledged the significance of their roles, noting, “I am sure today you are satisfied that you are almost at the highest level of your career. The only level you may now want to reach is the Head of Civil Service.”
