Edo Governor, Monday Okpebholo
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, inaugurated the Governing Council of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, on Monday, in charge of restoring the institution’s lost glory.
In a statement by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the inauguration took place at the New Festival Hall of Government House, Benin City.
The Governor stressed that education is the bedrock of development and that AAU has a crucial role to play in achieving this.
The Governor was accompanied to the inauguration by his deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa; Secretary to the State Government, Barr. Musa Ikhilor; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Gani Audu; former Deputy Governor of the state, Philip Shaibu; former Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Prince Clem Agba; and former member representing Oredo at the House of Representatives, Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama, among others.
Governor Okpebholo urged the council to work with dedication, vision, and a deep sense of responsibility, advising them to collaborate and restore the university’s reputation as a centre of academic excellence.
He said, “Education is the bedrock of development, and Ambrose Alli University holds a special place in Edo State. The institution has produced some of Nigeria’s finest minds, and it is our responsibility to restore its lost glory and ensure its continued existence.
“One of the first steps my administration took in this regard was increasing the university’s monthly subvention from N41 million to N500 million.
“This bold step reflects our commitment to AAU’s revival. We also introduced special interventions to accelerate infrastructural development, ensuring that students and staff have the necessary resources to thrive.”
Governor Okpebholo noted that his administration had successfully intervened to resolve the challenges faced by over 100 medical students at the university, bringing relief to them.
He added, “To members of the governing council, this is your time to make a lasting impact. You have been chosen because we believe in your ability to restore AAU’s lost glory. I urge you to serve with dedication, vision, and a deep sense of responsibility. Let us work together to rebuild its reputation and make it once again a centre of academic excellence.
“To the university community—management, staff, and students—let me assure you that this administration will continue to support you in every possible way. Together, we will build a brighter future for Ambrose Alli University.”
Chairman of the council, Chief Dan Orbih, expressed gratitude to the Governor for the opportunity to serve.
He stressed that education is key to Edo State’s future and that AAU’s role in the state’s development cannot be overstated.
“It is clear from the steps you have taken so far that the objective is to revive the university,” he said.
Other members of the council include Prof. Friday Okonofua, Prof. Steve Amiemenkharu, Hon. Lukman Muhammad, Prof. Idialu Jeremiah Uwaifo, Prof. Eric Kelly Inanemo Omogbai, and Prof. Omoruyi Ikponmwonsa Osahon.
