Rey Misterio Sr. (Uncle Of WWE’s Rey Mysterio) Passes Away

Rey Misterio Sr., the uncle of WWE’s Rey Mysterio, has passed away.

AAA announced the news on December 20, and one of his sons confirmed his passing. Misterio (real name Miguel Ángel López Díaz) had a legendary career as a wrestler/trainer. He also trained his nephew and permitted him to use the name Rey Misterio Jr.

Misterio Sr. started wrestling in the 1970s. He later won titles in AAA, WWA, Tijuana Wrestling, and other promotions. He memorably appeared at WCW Starrcade 1990, where he teamed up with Konnan. Misterio Sr. was inducted into the Tijuana Hall of Fame in 2006.

Among other stars, Misterio Sr. trained Konnan and Psicosis. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter highlighted the impact that Rey Misterio Sr. had on the business and compared him to Jerry Lawler. He also pointed to Misterio Sr.’s track record as a trainer.
