The world of professional wrestling has suffered another loss with the passing of ‘Pistol’ Pete Sanchez, Ric Flair’s first WWE opponent, who passed away on July 27th.

Pete Sanchez was known for his role as an enhancement talent, contributing significantly to various promotions such as the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF), Stampede Wrestling, Amarillo Wrestling, and the Midwest Wrestling Association.

Renowned wrestling journalist Bill Apter shared that Sanchez had been battling an illness for some time, praising his work ethic and describing him as a genuinely pleasant person to work with.

Throughout his career, Sanchez participated in numerous memorable matches, including his bout against Ric Flair at Madison Square Garden on March 1, 1976. This match was particularly significant as it marked Flair’s debut in a McMahon-endorsed ring, following a devastating plane crash in October 1975 that nearly ended Flair’s career.

Sanchez worked alongside and against many top stars of his era, including Bret Hart, Jake Roberts, the Big Boss Man, and the Road Warriors. Although often featured in losing efforts, Sanchez did secure victories, notably against Johnny Rodz and Kevin Sullivan. In Stampede Wrestling, under the ring name Caruso, he captured the International Tag Team Championship with Carlos Belafonte, also known as WWE Hall of Famer Carlos Colon. This achievement laid the groundwork for the World Wrestling Council (WWC) in Puerto Rico. Sanchez also held tag team titles with Bill Cody and continued to wrestle into the early 1990s.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to Pete Sanchez’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.
