Rio Ferdinand fears Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim is set to make a transfer mistake in the final week of the January window.
Most of the transfer speculation around Old Trafford has been on outgoings rather than incomings, with Antony leaving to join Real Betis on loan and several other players linked with moves.
English winger Marcus Rashford and Brazilian midfielder Casemiro are both expected to attract interest in the final week of the winter window after being frozen out by Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford hot-seat back in November.
Amorim is, though, looking to bring in Danish left-back Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and has been linked with a surprising move for Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku.
United have expressed interest in signing Nkunku as Alejandro Garnacho continues to be linked with Chelsea as well as Serie A side Napoli.
Ferdinand does not see the sense in Manchester United selling Garnacho, however, and says he is one of the few ‘impactful’ forwards in the Red Devils squad.
Garnacho only turned 20 last summer but has already made more than 100appearances for United and has continued to feature amid speculation he could leave the club, playing 81 minutes of Sunday’s Premier League victory over Fulham.
Asked if he was surprised Garnacho could leave Manchester United following the win at Craven Cottage, Ferdinand told TNT Sports: ‘I am. Where’s that spark coming from in this team?
‘He probably doesn’t fit the profile of player that Ruben Amorim is used to having there.
‘Alejandro Garnacho is an out-and-out winger but he’s definitely someone who has an impact. He will have an impact in the game and create something wherever he plays.
‘The kid normally finds a way to make an impact and he’s out of the academy. Because of the financial rules clubs are being incentivise to sell homegrown talent and that should never be the case.
‘In terms of the creativity, Manchester United need to improve. Ruben Amorim needs to find a way to get more out of the attacking players.’
Amorim’s side were less than convincing against Fulham but secured a much-needed win thanks to Lisandro Martinez’s deflected strike.
‘That feeling of winning and three points is really important for us,’ Amorim said after United moved up to 12th in the Premier League. ‘You cannot see a great improvement in the team and that is a fact.
‘But to win helps us to improve. We’ve had some lack of luck in some games. Today, was not the best match but we managed to win.
‘The important thing is I have a clear idea of what I want to do. Sometimes I’m frustrated. We want to play a different style and we are going to play different style in the future.’
