Riteish Deshmukh and Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Studios are collaborating on Raja Shivaji, a historical action movie about the founder of the Maratha empire.
Filmed in both Marathi and Hindi, the film will follow the journey of young Shivaji, who founded the empire in the 17th century.
Raja Shivaji will be produced by Jyoti Deshpande and actress Genelia Deshmukh, the wife of Riteish Deshmukh, with music composed by brothers and music duo Ajay–Atul.
“Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not a mere historical figure; he is an emotion, a timeless saga of valour, and a beacon of hope that has illuminated hearts for over three and a half centuries,” actor-director Deshmukh said. “Our deepest aspiration has always been to immortalize his awe-inspiring journey on the grand canvas of cinema — a journey of epic proportions.”
Jyoti Deshpande, President of Media and Entertainment at Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) Media, added: “At Jio Studios, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of storytelling and bringing diverse narratives to audiences worldwide. Raja Shivaji embodies this vision, it’s not just a regional tale, it’s a culturally rooted narrative designed to transcend languages and regions.”
Deshmukh made his directorial debut with Ved (2022) and acted in the likes of TFTNW (2022) and the Housefull franchise.
Cinematography comes from Santosh Sivan, who has largely worked in Malayalam, Hindi and Tamil cinema. Raja Shivaji marks his debut in Marathi cinema.
