Rivers Crisis: Gov Fubara Threatens To Stun His Opponents

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has vowed to defy those interpreting his “sincere decision” to implement the presidential peace pact as a display of weakness.

Addressing members of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) from all 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers during their visit to the Government House, Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Fubara stated that he had observed numerous comments regarding the peace initiative’s implementation and opted for silence as an act of maturity and wisdom.

However, he emphasized the necessity of setting the record straight for clarity, stating that the agreement accepted during the 2023 political crisis intervention by the President was a political resolution.

Governor Fubara stated: “Let me say it here for record purposes: What is happening here in our dear State is somebody who has respect for an elder. Mr. President invited all the parties to Abuja, and came out with a resolution that we should go and implement. That resolution, I am implementing it. It is not a constitutional implementation. It is a political solution to a problem.

“And I am doing it because of the respect I have for Mr President. But, let me say it here, if that action that I have accepted to take would be seen as a weakness, I will surprise them. I want this message to go to them.”

He continued by addressing recent criticisms regarding crowd attendance at thanksgiving rallies, remarking that the solidarity shown during the NULGE visit reflected genuine appreciation for good governance and divine blessings.

Fubara emphasized his commitment to leaving a positive legacy, focusing on genuine impact and policy implementation for societal betterment.

Furthermore, he urged continued support, understanding, and peaceful cooperation from the people, reaffirming his readiness to stand by those who uphold righteousness and to confront challenges with resolve.

The Governor’s statements follow recent threats of fresh impeachment proceedings by the Rivers House of Assembly due to perceived non-compliance with the peace pact.

Speaker of the Assembly, Martins Amaehwule, expressed concerns over the governor’s alleged failure to adhere to the terms of the agreement brokered by Tinubu, emphasizing the assembly’s constitutional mandate and readiness to resort to impeachment if necessary.
