Flooded portion of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway.

Motorists and travellers on the Sagamu-Benin Expressway on Saturday decried several hours spent on the road due to failed portions of the road, just some metres from the Sagamu old toll gate now taken over by a pool of flood for about four days.

They called on the Federal Government to take responsibility for fixing this part of the road for a very long time, saying that many of them have had cause to spend hours on this black spot in the recent past.

Our Correspondent who was at this spot on Saturday witnessed the gridlock caused by the flooded road, while some vehicles got stuck in this pool of water.

Speaking with our reporters, Mr Johnson Akano, a driver said, “It is unfortunate that the government has refused to fix this terrible place for a long time. There was a time I wasted over five hours here. I did not get to Ijebu-Ode on that day until around 1 a.m. of the following day. What this place needs is just a drainage that can always provide pathway for the water to flow away.

“The issue of palliatives whereby they bring in stones and gravel to fill the place is no longer acceptable, the government should please be responsible and reconstruct this road.”

Another road user, Mr Thomas Francis, also begged the Federal government to pay attention to the repair of the road given its current terrible state.

Francis said “The importance of this road to the economy of the nation is unquantifiable yet the Federal government has neglected it. Aside from this place Koso/Ologede which has become our nightmare for some time now, the stretch of the road from Sagamu to Ijebu-Ode is terrible.

“The road is filled with gaping holes such that one will think that the road has been abandoned.  What many motorists now do is to travel one way which often leads to avoidable accidents.

“We are using this opportunity to call on President Bola Tinubu to direct the Minister of Works to ensure that motorists and commuters plying this road heap a sigh of relief.”

Mr Kennedy Ogunlana also lamented the poor state of the road calling for quick intervention of the Federal government.

Ogunlana said “It is annoying that for about four days now, the water has taken over this Koso/Ologede area of Sagamu-Benin Expressway and this is not the first time, it has always been like this giving people a lot of trouble.

“The truth is that from Sagamu end to Ijebu-Ode up to Ijebu Ife axis, this section of the road is now in total state of disrepair. The government can not continue to look the other way when its citizens are dying of avoidable death because the road is so bad.

“To manage this situation, you will see motorists driving against the traffic, driving one way and facing oncoming vehicles and this usually causes avoidable accidents. Sometimes, you can spend as much as four hours or more to get out of the gridlock usually created by these failed sections of the road.

“President Tinubu and Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State should please help us to fix this road. The situation is getting worse every day.”
