Robert Downey Jr. Very Involved With Developing Character for 'Avengers: Doomsday'

Robert Downey Jr. is getting ready to make his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The 59-year-old Oscar winner famously played Iron Man in the franchise for over a decade before his character passed away in 2019′s Avengers: Endgame.

However, in July 2024 it was revealed that he would be returning for 2026′s Avengers: Doomsday playing Doctor Doom. Robert will also be back the following year in Avengers: Secret Wars.

In a new interview, directors and brothers Joe and Anthony Russo opened up about the prep that is going on behind the scenes to get the character ready.

Speaking to ET, they stressed that Robert was directly involved in preparing for this interpretation of Doctor Doom.

“He is so immersed in it. He is so dialed in,” Joe explained. “He’s writing backstory, costume ideas.”

He continued, adding, “We were just on the phone with him this morning before we got here talking about it. He just loves really rich three-dimensional characters. He sees a real opportunity here with the character.”

The brothers just shared even more news about the upcoming Avengers movies.
