Robert Pattinson weighed in on the enduring popularity of the Twilight franchise and directly responded to its haters. The 38-year-old actor became a household name playing Edward Cullen, the glittery vampire who falls in love with Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), in the big-screen adaptation of Stephenie Meyer‘s novels. Years after the final movie premiered in theaters, fans are still as passionate about the series as ever. In a new interview, Robert shared his thoughts on the “fascinating phenomenon.” He also had some thoughts about anyone who thinks that Twilight “ruined the vampire genre.” Keep reading to find out more… In a translated interview with GQ Spain, Robert admitted to being surprised by the franchise’s staying power. “I find it a fascinating phenomenon. I mean, I can’t believe it. I think this renaissance has emerged in Korea and has happened a bit like with K-pop, which has taken off in Korea, but then has seduced a young Western population. I have a hard time believing the cultural relevance that these movies maintain because they are so old… The first one was released in 2008, d-mmit,” he said with a laugh. As for the films’ haters, Robert cannot be bothered. “I love that people keep telling me, ‘Man, Twilight ruined the vampire genre,’” he said. “Are you still stuck on that s-it? How can you be sad about something that happened almost 20 years ago? It’s crazy.” Elsewhere in the interview, he compared his experience filming The Batman with his new movie Mickey 17. Notably, Robert said that one was much more stressful. “With Batman the feeling was very different. There was so much anticipation, the stress was so palpable… as if that were not enough, we filmed during Covid, which made production very complicated,” he recalled. “Nothing to do with the filming of Mickey 17, which was fun and enjoyable.” Believe it or not, Robert almost wasn’t cast in Twilight over concerns that he wasn’t attractive enough. Before he was cast, nine other popular stars were in the running. We rounded up seven big projects that Robert auditioned to star in but did not book.
