Saudi Arabia looked set for a spot in the quarter-finals after Abdullah Radif gave them a 1-0 lead, however, that was cancelled out in the ninth minute of stoppage time when Cho Gue-sung took the tie to extra time and then penalties.

With Heung-min Son on the shootout scoresheet, Saudi Arabia and South Korea scored two apiece, before Mancini's side missed two consecutive spot-kicks, allowing South Korea to go 3-2 up with their penalty next to be taken.

But with Saudi Arabia's prospects suddenly not looking to great, Mancini decided that he'd seen enough.

Instead of waiting for what turned out to be the winning penalty, Mancini walked away from the pitch and made his way back to the changing rooms.

While it was a disappointing night for Saudi Arabia, the conduct of Mancini will undoubtedly be the biggest talking point.

The Italian has a glittering CV having won the Premier League with Manchester City, Serie with Inter Milan on three occasions and the European Championship with Italy, where they beat England in the final.

But after being eliminated from the AFC Asian Cup with Saudi Arabia, time will tell if he'll get the chance to guide them to future success.
