Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has disclosed that he was given lots of opportunities under former senior national team coach Gernot Rohr.
Recall that Okoye was invited for the Super Eagles 2-2 draw with Ukraine in an international friendly in September 2019 but left to sit on the bench for the entire duration of the game.
However, the Sparta Rotterdam goalie made his debut in the following match, the 1-1 draw against Brazil in October 2019.
The Udinese goalkeeper later grew to establish himself as Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper, which helped to secure a move to the Premier League.

Speaking in an interview with TribalFootball, Okoye stated that he’ll be grateful for the opportunities given to him by Rohr.
“Yes, it has always been Nigeria for me, a childhood dream playing for the Super Eagles. Yes, Lutz played a big part in that… he was in good contact with Nigeria’s former coach Gernot Rohr; he opened that door for me. With Rohr I had a fantastic coach in my early years as a Super Eagle, I’ll be forever grateful for the opportunities he gave me in that time!
“I am happy how things went; I learned a lot from all of that, I was lucky enough to have people who believed in me, believing in myself and with God on my side. Yes, I’m in contact with most of my former goalkeeping coaches, all of them helped me a lot on this journey which has started 20 years ago.
“I am thankful for each and every one of my former goalkeeping coaches.”
