Silent against Georgia on Wednesday evening (0-2), Cristiano Ronaldo experienced a sad first with Portugal.

After starting Euro 2024 with two successes, against the Czech Republic (2-1) and Turkey (3-0), Portugal fell to Georgia (0-2), Wednesday evening on the occasion of the 3rd and final day of the group stage. It must be said that Roberto Martinez had decided to rotate his squad, while qualification for the round of 16 was already assured for the Seleçao.

If many changes have been made by the Portuguese coach, Cristiano Ronaldo has made a third start in a row. And a third match without finding the net, thus ending the group stage of this Euro 2024 without a single goal scored. A great first in the career of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Ronaldo, a historic drought

Indeed, CR7 has always found the fault during the group stage of a major tournament since its debut with Portugal. At Euro 2004 and 2008 he scored a goal, as at the 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022 World Cup. At Euro 2012 and 2016 the Al-Nassr striker already scored 2 goals, while he scored 4 goals at the 2018 World Cup and 5 at Euro 2020.

Replaced in the 66th minute of play against the Georgians, Cristiano Ronaldo appeared annoyed when returning to the substitutes’ bench. However, he can console himself with his record of matches played in a major tournament (50 in total, 22 in World Cups, 28 in Euros). Or not…
