There is never a dull moment at Manchester United and Ruud van Nistelrooy knows all about that as he steps into the role as interim manager.

Van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team for tonight’s Carabao Cup clash against Leicester City.

It’s a chance for the Dutchman to manage his former club at Old Trafford, which he describes as a ‘great honour’ in the lead-up to the match.

“Even on an interim basis, it is a great honour to manage the club I love for however long I am asked to do so,” Van Nistelrooy said, as per the Daily Mail.

“I promise that I will continue to give my all, in whatever capacity, to try and turn around our fortunes.”

Van Nistelrooy’s future not set in stone

It is worth noting that Van Nistelrooy’s future is not set in stone, with Ruben Amorim set to be hired as the new manager. The Sporting boss will want to bring his own coaches with him to try ensure he has the setup he needs to succeed.

The Athletic claim Van Nistelrooy was not an INEOS hire, but a proposal by Ten Hag’s agent Kees Vos when discussions took place over refreshing the coaching set up. United look set to assemble a new coaching staff just a few months later.

Van Nistelrooy scored 150 goals for United between 2001-06 has had his name sung on the terraces in recent weeks. The same will happen tonight when he takes to the dugout at Old Trafford.
