John Cena wasn’t expected at this year’s Money in the Bank event, but reports started to emerge as the show approached that the Greatest of All Time was in the building. Nobody would have guessed that he was in Toronto to make an announcement about his WWE retirement.

Cena will wrap up his in-ring career at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas. That will be a marquee match at the showcase of the immortals, no matter who wrestles Cena during his last match. Big Match John will make 30 to 40 dates for WWE in the meantime, and fans will undoubtedly buy up every possible ticket for those shows.

CM Punk already made it clear that he would love to wrestle John Cena during his retirement tour. Considering their history together, that actually sounds plausible, especially since Punk is still under WWE contract. RVD isn’t in WWE anymore, but he would throw his hat in the ring.

During an upcoming episode of his One of Kind podcast, RVD stated that he’d be down to face John Cena during this retirement run. We will have to see if they end up booking it that way.

“I hope they bring me in for a rematch with Cena. That would be super cool. I don’t know if they know, but I know I could have that same match. Absolutely.”

Van Dam battled Cena for the WWE Championship during the 2006 One Night Stand pay-per-view. That match in the Hammerstein Ballroom, an old stomping ground for ECW, was brutal for Cena. RVD called his shot with his Money in the Bank cash-in ahead of time to challenge Cena at the event, where he won the match in front of a packed and ravenous crowd of ECW fans. There were “If Cena Wins We Riot” signs in the crowd, and they meant it that night. Only time will tell how things would go today.

Odds are, it won’t make much sense to bring RVD in for a match against John Cena in WWE. His AEW appearances may have also cost him certain opportunities with the company. RVD is down to show up wherever he’s booked, because as a veteran free agent who believes he can offer more in the ring, he will keep working as much as he can as retirement doesn’t seem to be in RVD’s agenda.
