Ryan Murphy Expresses Interest In Additional 'Monsters' Episodes Amid Developments in Menendez Brothers' Case, Talks Reaction to Show

Ryan Murphy opened up about his hit series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

If you were unaware, the limited series tells a dramatized version of the story of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who received lifelong prison sentences for the murder of their parents.

Monsters was slammed by members of the Menendez family upon its release. However, it has sparked a conversation about the case and led to people championing the brothers being released from jail.

Earlier this month, it was announced that a hearing will take place to examine new evidence that has emerged.

In a recent interview, Ryan reflected on the show’s success, negative reactions to it and if he was interested in adding additional episodes thanks to developments in the case.

Ryan told Variety that he and co-creator Ian Brennan “are in absolute amazement and shock that this has happened, to be quite honest.”

“When we were writing the Menendez Story — we’ve been working on this for two years — nobody was talking about the Menendez brothers. We never thought anybody ever would again,” he admitted.

He added that he did not advocate for anyone being “thrown away forever,” expressing hope that Erik and Lyle would be freed.

While the brothers’ attorney Mark Geragos has slammed the show as a “caricature,” Ryan said that he believed their “dramatization” of sexual abuse allegations “really moved the needle with an outpouring of outrage.”

“As [Geragos] himself admitted, that case was nowhere. It was floundering. There was no interest. There was no momentum,” he said.

With the new developments, Ryan said it had “been discussed” to expand the season of the show.

“Everyone has been interested in that,” he said. “I think everyone wants to see how this story ends because this story is not over.”

See what else he’s had to say about the case.
