Belarusian tennis star Aryna Sabalenka has defeated her American counterpart, Jessica Pegula, to clinch the 2024 US Open women’s title.

She claimed her third Grand Slam title overall with the victory at the Arthur Ashe on Saturday, adding the trophy to the two she earned at the Australian Open each of the past two seasons.

Sabalenka, who lost the 2023 US Open final to Coco Gauff, defeated Pegula with an emphatic two sets 7-5, 7-5.

The world no. 2 sealed the 61-minute opener with a feathered backhand drop shot that Pegula chased down but failed to get over the net to win it 7-5.

In a thrilling second set, Sabalenka fought to prevent the 30-year-old American from a comeback win.

The 26-year-old became the first woman to reach consecutive U.S. Open finals since Serena Williams in 2018 and 2019.

Speaking after her win, Sabalenka said, “I’m speechless. So many times, I was so close, and it’s always been a dream of mine. To Jessica – you are showing you are going to get one – maybe more.

“In the second set, I was praying. I remember those tough losses. Never give up on your dream. I am super proud of myself.”

On her part, Pegula said, “An incredible month, coming off a hot summer. I’m really grateful for some incredible matches.

“I wish she would have let me get one set. If not the best hardcourt player in the world. I was happy I was able to fight back, but in the end, it wasn’t enough.”

Sabalenka will receive a $3.6 million winner’s check.
