Senator Sumaila Kawu, representing Kano South, disclosed that his total monthly earnings amount to over ₦21 million.
This revelation starkly contrasts with the ₦1.06 million monthly salary and allowances reported by the federal government through the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) for each senator. Kawu explained that while his official salary is around ₦1 million, additional allowances and deductions bring his total monthly take-home to ₦21 million. This disclosure has fueled ongoing debates about the compensation of federal lawmakers in Nigeria.
The controversy gained traction after former President Olusegun Obasanjo criticized lawmakers for setting their own salaries and allowances, which he described as immoral. Additionally, former Senator Shehu Sani previously revealed that senators receive a monthly running cost of ₦13.5 million, separate from their official salaries. The Senate has refuted these claims, labeling them as falsehoods.
